Embryo donation

A donated embryo is one of the options for assisted reproduction, where the female donor donates eggs and the male donor donates sperm to a couple – the acceptors, to allow them to help them conceive a child. Couples that need a donated embryo cannot use their own eggs nor sperm for different reasons.

There are many cases of couples who find themselves in this situation. Embryo donation offers a solution.

Who is it for

The embryo donation programme is intended for couples, where the woman does not produce any eggs, or produces a small amount. This affects women with abnormal ovarian development, affected by premature ovarian failure or older women going through menopause.  Combining this with the male factor, when there are not any of his sperm available for standard methods of fertilization.

Embryo donation is intended for:

  • Women produce low-quality eggs. Those eggs cannot be fertilized, or the embryos created from them stop developing during cultivation, again combined with the male factor.
  • One or both partners are carriers of a hereditary disease. Based on genetic testing, a chromosomal aberration (a change in the structure, or number of chromosomes) or a monogenic disease, which can be passed on to the child, was found. It is also possible that one of them or both have undergone some types of chemo- or radiotherapy. In combination with the above it is necessary to use a donated embryo.

Embryo donation – information for the recipients

  • In the case of a donated embryo, the embryo is in the blastocyst stage and it was created by fertilizing the eggs of an anonymous donor with the sperm of an anonymous donor. In this form of the donor programme, we guarantee an embryo transfer of one high-quality embryo.
  • In the beginning of the process the couple who is requesting embryo donation fills out a questionnaire that includes the selection criteria of the donors (blood type, hair color, eye color, body type etc.) Then we will start looking for a suitable donor based on this information.
  • We do all the examinations required by legislation with all donors, this includes blood tests, genetic testing and for female donors we also do a gynecologic examination.
  • Both donors are in the range of 18 to 34 years old. They have Czech or Slovak citizenship, European appearance and high school education at least.
  • Donation of eggs or sperm is legally anonymous on both sides in the Czech Republic.
  • You can discuss all the details of embryo donation with our IVF specialist or our coordinator.
