Accreditation of the Laboratory of Medical Genetics

On July, 26th, 2017 an audit by the Czech Institute for Accreditation took place at the Laboratory of Medical Genetics. This audit was carried out as a follow-up step after moving the laboratory complex to new space in the building of the clinic at Štefánikova Street in Brno.

The Laboratory of Medical Genetics of the Sanatorium Helios has confirmed its accreditation according to ČSN EN ISO 15189: 2013, which is the highest possible evaluation of the quality of work in laboratories.
Educational seminar in Sanatorium Helios

On Thursday, 22. 6. 2017, we organized a seminar titled "Quality of Embryo Cultivation".
Prim. MUDr. Pavel Texl in his lecture introduced the latest and most advanced mini-incubator GERI, which combines all the advantages of mini-incubators with time lapse, the function of continuous embryo scanning using small cameras.

Incubator Geri was ideated and created by Genea´s  fertility experts. (Genea World Leading Fertility)
Attention was also paid to the increasing average age of those couples who desire for a baby and come to Sanatorium Helios with fertility issues. Mgr. et RNDr. Petr Popov, CSc. in his contribution focused on determining the woman's ovarian reserve based on the detection of AMH, FSH and inhibin B serum levels.
RNDr. Kateřina Wagnerová, Head of the IVF Laboratory, lectured on the topic: The number of transferred embryos and its impact on the success of the IVF cycle.
We would like to thank all doctors and all professional medical staff members for their participation.
Psychological counseling and relaxation techniques

In Sanatorium Helios, we have opened a psychological counseling service to facilitate the course of treatment, reduce stress and ease negative experiencing of troubles.

Our psychologist is Mgr. Lenka Vildová, who provides the therapy. She also performs relaxation techniques and relaxation exercising that focus on the body, such as craniosacral massages for couples.
This professional psychological help is not focused only on patients going through the IVF treatment, but it is available to everyone, who feels troubled and in need of help.
Educational seminar

On Thursday, 20.10. 2016 was held a seminar for doctors and health professionals in Sanatorium Helios.

This seminar was titled "Modern methods in vitrification". The Chief Physician of Sanatorium Helios, Pavel Texl, M. D. explained the importance of using reliable methods of cryopreservation and vitrification. He also introduced Gavi, our world-first instrument that automates key parts of the vitrification process and ensures that embryos are consistently snap frozen – then stores them in an own Gavi pod untilour patients need them.

Gavi was developed by the Australian company Genea, whose license Sanatorium Helios owns. Thank to this cooperation we have been the first in the Czech Republic to begin with vitrification and achieve high success rates in frozen embryo transfers and egg freezing.

Prof. Pavel Trávník, M. D. from Sanatorium Repromeda has shared his experiences from IVF congress in Moscow with the present doctors and health professionals, and Monika Dugátová. M. D. from 1. Clinic of Gynaecologiy and Obstetrics at LFUK UNB in Bratislava devoted her contribution to cross-border health care in reproductive medicine.

We would like to thank all doctors for their interest in our workshop, and we look forward to the next meeting!
Educational seminar in Sanatorium Helios

On May 26 we organized a special seminar titled "Today and tomorrow of assisted reproduction" with lectures of prim. MUDr. Pavel Texl and prof. MUDr. Jiri Santavy, Csc.

A leading expert in the field of clinical genetics professor MUDr. Jiri Santavy, Csc. focused in his presentation on the current trends in prenatal diagnosis. Prim. MUDr. Pavel Texl, sponsor of the event, then pointed to the need to improve the quality of treatment in centers of assisted reproduction.

Currently in the Czech Republic there are 42 centres for assisted reproduction, among which are, however, significant differences in the quality of treatment and its success. Therefore, the doctors in Sanatorium Helios, along with others, strive for an objective assessment of thr centres that would help patients in choosing the facility, where they will undergo their treatment.

We greatly appreciate the participation of a number of nice guests, particularly gynecological doctors and GPs.

Lecture on Cancer Prevention

On November 23, 2015, we held a lecture of MUDr. Jan Sula, head of the Centre for Cancer Prevention Sanatorium Helios.

He talked about the importance of preventive gynecological examinations, because some women sometimes have a tendency to ignore them. Cervical cancer in the Czech Republic is unfortunately still rather widespread. Many women die because of it unnecessarily, although it can be detected and treated in time before the disease outbreaks.
The highest-risk group in the Czech Republic are women over 40-50, who mistakenly have a feeling that when they have no symptoms, they do not need to see their doctors very often. Cervical cancer is insidious – in its early stages there are no effects. When problems such as bleeding and pain occur,it may already be too late to treat the disease successfully.
International Conference in Switzerland

An international conference was held in the Swiss Ascona to mark the 30th anniversary of the birth of their first child after IVF in Switzerland on October 23.

Prim. MUDr. Pavel Texl gladly accepted the invitation of his colleague Dr. med. Jürg Stamm from the center for assisted reproduction in Locarno.

Great attention was paid to the issue of the raising age of couples longing for a child. Prim. MUDr. Texl presented the accomplishments of Sanatorium Helios in the donor program. He stressed that the success depends on the quality of embryos, which, however, involves a number of factors. In his speech he also stressed the long-term cooperation with the Australian clinic Genea World Leading Fertility, which has taught us that it is important to pay attention to every detail of our work.

It is worth noting that the first baby in the world after the method GIFT was born in Brno in 1982, 33 years ago, and two years later the first child after IVF was born here as well.
MACS – a new method of sperm selection

We have introduced a new method of sperm selection before fertilization. It is magnetically activated cell sorting (MACS) . A magnetic field can capture the sperm with damaged DNA. Such selected sperm, compared to the original sample, have better characteristics and their use increases the chances of successful fertilization.

GeneScreen PLUS

We are excited to tell you about another great service from Genea our license partner, which we also provide – GeneScreen PLUS.
GeneScreen PLUS is a genetic test using revolutionary technology called Next Generation Sequencing which analyses your DNA to search for some common but serious genetic mutations that can be unknowingly passed on to your children.

• You can have Genea’s GeneScreen PLUS test before you start trying to conceive.
• Many of us are carriers of mutations in our genes which can lead to genetic conditions - what is important is to discover if you and your partner carry the same condition.
• Many carriers do not know of a family history of the disease – this can identify anything before you try.

IVF Cycles Succes Rates in 2014

We proudly present you our success rates in Sanatorium Helios in 2014. We succeeded even better than in the previous years, although aour patients are on average slightly older. In the text you will learn, how the results were calculated and what we do to keep them getting better.

Genea Biocells Pty, a subsidiary of Genea Limited with which Sanatorium Helios has been cooperating for more than 10 years, has become the world's largest provider of human embryonic stem cells.

Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, meaning that they have the potential to form any cell type of the human body and can replicate indefinitely, while all other non-pluripotent types of stem cells have some limitations. These cell lines will give hopes to scientists across the world to find treatments, and cures for some of the most devastating diseases humans face today.

Sanatorium Helios also significantly contributed to deriving stem cells from embryos as couples, undergoing IVF at our clinic, voluntarily donated embryos for research purposes.

For example from embryos, which  after a PGD  are reported abnormal and are not transferred, it is possible to obtain embryonic stem cells that may be used for research and testing of  medicine for serious and life -threatening diseases such as Huntington's disease or tuberous sclerosis - Read more at http://www.sanatorium-helios.com/pgd

Thanks to cooperation with the society Genea we are always a step ahead in comparison with the other centres and we offer our clients better chance of getting pregnant and having a healthy child.

As we announced last week, Genea, that we have been cooperating with for more than 10 years, presented their news in the field of assisted reproduction under the brand Genea Biomedx in London. We are going to introduce it soon in our labs as the first centre in Europe.

Vitrification (a way of freezing) of embryos and oocytes is one of the most demanding processes that are performed in an embryology lab. This is caused by sensitivity of embryos and oocytes towards any changes of external conditions. Thus embryologist’s accuracy and precision is the main factor during vitrification. It´s also the reason why the differences in results of frozen embryos are so big in different centres.

Although our embryologists have been trained in processes very conscientiously, human factor can never be eliminated. That’s why the society Genea, after many years of development has brought a revolutionary new technology – GAVI (Genea Automated Vitrification Instrument), which is the only existing, fully automatic device for vitrification of embryos and oocytes in the world.

Our head of embryology laboratory has become a certified clinical embryologist

Embyologists in modern world must be able to adapt quickly to new technologies, to understand and use progress in cell biology and genetics and they must be capable of adopting them in clinical practice.
That’s why ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) set up a committee which defined operations required to acquire the certification of “clinical embryologist” and prepared a demanding exam that applicants must take in English only once a year.

The aim of this international exam is comparision of knowledge and capability of embryologists from all the world.
Congratulations to RNDr. Katerina Okenkova who has obtained the certification this year at ESHRE in London.
Results for 2012

In 2012 more than 94 % of patients became already pregnant in one IVF cycle.
Last year we achieved a great success rate - more than 62 % of biochemical pregnancy and more than 50 % of clinical pregnancies with fetal heart activity after a single embryo transfer!

Educational seminary

On October, the 19th an educational seminary took place in the restaurant of Sanatorium Helios.
The topics were devoted to genetics and the genetic causes of infertility.

Why Sanatorium Helios

Infertility diagnosis

In most cases, the probable cause of infertility is discovered. Only about one fifth of them remain unexplained. However, even for these couples, the treatment or assisted reproduction can be successful.

Causes of infertility

The problem is often related to the woman. The truth is that 2/3 cases are caused by the male factor and less than a third by the female factor. In some cases, both partners participate in the couple's infertility, or it remains unresolved.

Genea (Sydney IVF)

In the Czech Republic, the treatment of infertility is associated with assisted reproduction at a level comparable to Western Europe. All centers of assisted reproduction in the Czech Republic have, or should have, an internationally recognized quality certification known as ISO 9001.

Assisted reproduction

If pregnancies do not take place even after eliminating causes, or in the cases of disorders, which cannot be solved in another way, your physician may suggest to you one of the assisted reproduction methods.

The Cryoembryo Transfer (KET)

Cryopreservation (freezing) is a safe method of keeping embryos in cryo containers with liquid nitrogen at −196 °C. Two basic methods of cryopreservation are generally used: slow cryopreservation and vitrification.
